Leamington FC can confirm that the club voted to null and void the Vanarama National League North 2020/21 season.
The decision was taken after much soul searching by the Board of Directors on the key issues of fulfilling the competition, health and safety surrounding the COVID pandemic, plus the ongoing financial security of the club.
We believed that the protocols and measures taken throughout the competition thus far had been satisfactory to ensure the safety and well-being of players, staff and volunteers and were something that we could maintain, but were constantly keeping under review. Since taking that decision the news on vaccinations and their impact upon COVID-19 appears to be heading in the right direction.
During the recent two week suspension of the league, a significant number of clubs within the National League North and South indicated that they would refuse to play, until either COVID-19 testing was in place for all clubs or the outcome of funding from Sport England’s ‘Winter Survival Package’ was known, or both in some instances. This led to a significant loss of fixtures.
During that same two week window, following meetings between clubs and both the National League and Sports England representatives, it became clear that any future funding support to clubs would largely be in the form of loans with some grant funding available to clubs in the most critical need. It was also advised that outcomes of applications were likely to take 3-4 weeks in a best case scenario.
It became clear that even if there was a vote to continue the season the reality was that there would not be a full return to completion of scheduled fixtures until the outcome of funding applications were known to individual clubs. Even then, there was considerable doubt in our minds whether clubs who were refusing to play, would do so.
The impact of all this in our view was a likely extension of the league season thus incurring further players/staff costs for the additional weeks plus an expansion of the playing squad to deal with a congested fixture list. Player availability would undoubtedly be affected as all our players are part-time and their main jobs would clearly have to take precedence in these challenging times.
Whilst we were extremely grateful to the National Lottery for the £10 million cash injection to the National League which has allowed us to reach this point, it was also clear that there was financial risk to ourselves and many other clubs in a resumption of the league. Even at this stage there is still a lack of clarity whether clubs will breach league rules if loans are taken out through the Winter Survival Package.
It was the decision of the Board of Directors that we cannot expose our club to considerable financial risks and costs as a consequence of the total uncertainty of matters outlined above. As it is, the club still has substantial financial obligations to meet for staff/players wages and operating costs in the months ahead. We are extremely grateful to the players and staff who have agreed to assist in some cost cutting measures.
If the result of the voting had been in favour of a continuation of the season we would have honoured the decision to play. This would of course have necessitated a further review of all options, to ensure we did not place the club in financial jeopardy.
We would like to thank all our fans and sponsors for your considerable support these past 12 months and without whom we would not have been able to navigate through these most difficult of times. The team management and playing staff have performed brilliantly in arguably what was going to be our best performance ever since joining the National League. We were sat in 10th place in the league which was even more commendable when you take into account that 11 of our 15 fixtures played, were against teams occupying a position in the top 12 in the league.
A massive thank you to the media team who at very short notice, albeit with a couple of early glitches, pulled out all the stops in delivering a ‘streaming product’ that was the envy of many clubs within the league.
Finally, I want to thank my fellow directors, staff and volunteers who have worked incredibly hard behind the scenes to allow football to take place, thus enabling our supporters to follow the team and providing a welcome outlet for so many of you.
We will continue to keep you updated and look forward to that moment when supporters can return to stadia again, when it is safe to do so.
Jim Scott
Chairman
On behalf of the Board of Directors

Following a 4pm pitch inspection and temperatures predicted to get lower than -6 tonight, tomorrow’s scheduled fixture at home to Chester has been postponed due to a frozen pitch.
Following freezing temperatures over the past week and temperatures predicted to fall to -5 tonight with the pitch already frozen, the National League have given us permission to hold a 4pm pitch inspection ahead of tomorrow's scheduled game against Chester.
We will bring news of the pitch inspection as soon as we get the result.
Taylor Allen has returned to Leamington having extended his loan spell from Sky Bet League Two side Forest Green Rovers for a third month.
The youngster was involved in our two National League North fixtures in January as we picked up a point against leaders Gloucester, while he scored his first goal for us in the win at Chorley.
With Paul Holleran's squad stretched after a bruising encounter at Hereford last Saturday, Taylor's return is a welcome one.
'The only reason we didn't initially take up the option to extend Taylor's loan was because we were unsure whether the season was going to continue, and he was cup tied so unable to play in the FA Trophy,' said the manager. 'He has made a valuable contribution in his initial two months with us and he has slotted into the squad well, so having him back will benefit us greatly.'
Following a 1pm pitch inspection, tonight’s Vanarama National League North game between Kettering Town and Leamington has been postponed due to the Latimer Park pitch not being deemed playable. A new date for the rearranged fixture will be announced in due course.
There will be a pitch inspection at Latimer Park tomorrow at 1pm ahead of the Kettering Town - Leamington Vanarama National League North fixture. We will update you as soon as possible on the result of the inspection.

Congratulations to Brakes boss Paul Holleran, the recipent of the Manager of the Month award for January 2021!
Despite only playing two league games in January, Paul Holleran's men picked up 4 points against two high flying teams. The month was welcomed in as Leamington hosted Gloucester City on 2 January, a Junior English goal was enough to get a point against the league leaders. Goals from Taylor Allen and Dan Turner sunk the heroic Chorley, fresh off the back of a famous FA Cup win over Derby County, as Leamington ran out 2-1 victors at Victory Park to ensure they would stay outside of the play off places on goal difference. Brakes only played one more game in January as a result of the suspension to the league season as they knocked Kettering out of the FA Trophy in a game for the history books. A thoroughly professional Brakes performance got the job done despite three Kettering red cards and a floodlight failure which meant the game ended at 23:16!
Thoroughly deserved gaffer... Viva!
The manager had this to say on receiving the award:
'It's always nice to receive these awards as it is a reflection on how we have all done as a group. Despite all the uncertainty and stop-start nature of the season we can all be pleased with what we have done as a group. We've put a close knit squad together with some great young players; we've helped another lad back into full time football; we've put in some really good performances against good teams in the league. Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong last Saturday at Hereford, but that shouldn't detract from our good performances in previous rounds, so I am happy to collect this award on behalf of the group. We are just hoping for some clarity now with what happens moving forward with the season.'
Entry to the weekly draw costs just £1
