Phillips 66 Community Stadium
Saturday 19th December 2015
The only pre Christmas cheer to be found at the Phillips 66 Community Stadium on a desperately disappointing windswept afternoon would have been in the visiting dressing room, as Biggleswade Town completed a league double over Leamington with a single goal victory that few would argue they did not deserve.
Having performed so well at Altrincham in the FA Trophy the previous Tuesday Brakes unfortunately reverted to the kind of frustrating display that is starting to become a little too frequent this season, as they dropped more league points at home and slipped out of the top five as a result.
The weather conditions certainly did not help but the visitors seemed to cope better with them, and after a moment of quality from giant striker Inih Effiong that ultimately settled the game they were only troubled by Leamington on occasions, keeper Ian Brown dealing effectively with anything thrown at him when they did get through the Waders defence.
A speculative drive from Callum Lewis, the first effort from either side, found the roof of the Leamington net in the early stages, while a neat move out to the left saw James Fry play the ball into the centre, Joe Halsall directing a shot well wide of the target.
Keeper Brown and Lewis almost contrived to let in Rob Ogleby for what might have been a simple tap in, the ball ricocheting between the two before Lewis headed behind for a corner.
Shane Hill tried his luck from distance for the visitors, his shot whistling just over the bar, while Lee Chilton’s ball to the far post from the left wing saw Mark Coulson do just enough to put Halsall out of his stride, the ball rolling safely out of play.
The only goal arrived on 24 minutes, Effiong using his giant frame to good effect as he outmuscled and outpaced James Mace to the ball before driving a low angled effort across Tony Breeden and into the far corner of the net.
Ian Rees went close to doubling the lead soon afterwards when his well struck snap shot was deflected just over the bar. Leamington were struggling to get sustained possession of the ball, and when they did they were making little impression on the Biggleswade defence. They did have one good chance to level before half time when Chilton won a free kick which was floated into the area by Richard Taundry, only for Mace to direct his header well wide.
Ben Mackey drew a save from Brown with a good turn and shot early in the second half, and the keeper was quickly off his line later on to deny the striker again as he attempted to lift the ball towards goal.
Paul Holleran made a double substitution in an attempt to change his side’s fortunes, and it almost paid off for a second game running when Will Green was played in on goal with almost his first touch. Brown was off his line smartly again to smother the shot, however.
Rees saw a shot blocked as Biggleswade tried to take advantage of the ever widening spaces in front of them as Leamington pushed forward in search of an equaliser. They suffered a further setback in the closing stages when Mace added his name to the ever lengthening list of red cards this season, sent off for a studs raised challenge on substitute Chris Marsh.
There were a couple of late chances for a leveller, Green almost stealing in behind the Waders back line, stabbing his shot straight at Brown, while substitute Lee Moore’s turn and shot looked to have been blocked by a hand; evidently the home supporters were the only people to have seen it as the protests fell on deaf ears.
Overall it was a desperately disappointing afternoon, with Brakes failing to capitalise on the teams around them also dropping points. The forthcoming fixtures do not get any easier, with two local derbies against Bedworth and Stratford on the horizon. It is to be hoped that the team can raise themselves for a huge effort on Tuesday night to really kick start the season back into life.

Altrincham 1 Leamington 1
FA Trophy 1st Round
J.Davidson Stadium
Tuesday 15th December 2015
Brakes earned a creditable draw against National League opponents Altrincham to bring them back to the Phillips 66 Community Stadium for a replay next Tuesday.
Rob Ogleby scored the goal which levelled the tie less than a minute after coming on as a substitute, cancelling out Damian Reeves’ opener for Lee Sinnott’s men.
Alty dangerman Reeves planted an early shot wide of goal, while Jack Edwards ended some neat build up play down the Leamington left when he received the ball from Lee Chilton and fired just over the bar on the turn. This was quickly followed up by a shot just past the post by Ben Mackey.
Tony Breeden was called into action for the first time when James Lawrie’s 25 yard drive was pushed away, James Fry helping the ball further clear for a corner. Reeves then struck the upright with a header from a long throw into the box for the hosts.
The two division gap did not phase Leamington at all as the chances continued to come at both ends. Richard Taundry tried his luck from distance with a powerful effort that was deflected just past the post with Alty keeper Tim Deasy scrambling across to cover his goal.
Edwards was brought down by Scott Leather in a central position outside the box, presenting Lee Moore with another chance to exercise his dead ball skills. Unfortunately Deasy was equal to his curling strike, pushing the ball over the bar.
Michael Rankine headed wide from Jordan Sinnott’s free kick, and Leather saw a shot blocked by Breeden following a corner, Reeves firing the follow up over the bar as Leamington stood firm with the game goalless at the break.
Brakes made a sluggish start to the second half and were the grateful recipients of a rare slice of good fortune when Lawrie’s shot from the edge of the box squirmed under the body of Breeden only for the ball to stop short of the line, allowing the Leamington skipper to retrieve it.
Chilton came close to handing his side the lead when a driving run into the box ended with a stinging drive that was parried by Deasy, Mackey’s follow up striking a defender and going behind for a corner. James Mace then forced another save from the Altrincham keeper with a header from an Edwards flick on, before the home side took the lead with 20 minutes remaining, that man Reeves displaying the goal poacher’s instinct to follow up a shot from Rankine that was parried by Breeden, slamming the loose ball into the net.
Unperturbed by this Leamington continued to get forward and Mace had a fantastic chance to level when he flung himself at Edwards’ cross from the dead ball line, only for the ball to fly just over the bar.
Jamie Tank blocked another shot from Reeves, which led to a corner from which Breeden produced an outstanding save from Sinnott, the ball clipping the inside of the post. James Fry and Joe Magunda were well placed to block further efforts on the Leamington goal in the aftermath.
It was an inspired substitution by Paul Holleran which saw the tie level again with 13 minutes to play, introducing Ogleby and Ross Oulton, and within a matter of seconds the former had latched on to a pinpoint clearance from Breeden to go one on one with Deasy, clipping the ball past the advancing keeper for a well taken goal.
Jamie Hood intervened to clear a dangerous chance for Altrincham inside the final minutes, but Brakes held on for the draw and will now fancy their chances of a cup upset on their own patch in the replay, with Ryman League Premier Division side Bognor Regis Town awaiting the victors in Round 2.

Saturday 5th December 2015
A generally sound defensive performance and an outstanding goalkeeping display from skipper Tony Breeden were about the only positives Brakes could garner from a disappointing trip to the South Coast to face league leaders and title favourites Poole Town.
On the evidence of the 90 minutes it is not difficult to see why Tom Killick’s side are currently the division’s top scorers, and it is to Leamington’s credit that they only finished with the single goal as they carved out a number of very good chances in each half at a blustery and rain lashed Tatnam Ground.
The hosts looked dangerous in the opening exchanges without particularly creating anything and it was Joe Magunda who had the first effort at goal for either side, firing well over following a corner kick.
Thanks to a donation from their supporters club to cover his wages, Poole were able to bring in striker Lee Wort on loan from Gosport Borough. A prolific marksman in his for near neighbours Sholing, he could have bagged a debut hat trick on another day but was thwarted by the outstanding Breeden, who bravely dived at Wort’s feet to push the ball out of his path as he shaped to go past the keeper just inside the box.
Ben Mackey endured a frustrating afternoon plowing a lone furrow up front, and his only real sight of goal came when he collected a pass from Jack Edwards and drove a shot over the bar.
Steve Devlin’s shot just cleared the Leamington bar as he latched onto a half clearance but Poole were in front on 20 minutes, Marvin Brooks finding the net with a thumping downward header from Luke Burbidge’s dangerous diagonal ball in from the right. Breeden got a hand to the ball but was unable to keep it out.
Brakes attempted to respond, Joe Halsall was in a good position to receive James Fry’s ball in from the right as the wing back crossed from the dead ball line, but headed over the bar. Wort then went close for the hosts, crashing a shot just over.
The players were clearly frustrated with their lack of impact on the game, and this was highlighted when Edwards received a booking for a rather late challenge on Luke Roberts in midfield, with the home players and crowd feeling the card should have been red. Unfortunately they did not have to wait long for that as the midfielder reacted to Devlin leaving his leg in as they challenged for the ball, giving the referee little option but to send him off.
More patient build up play from Poole ended with a disappointing shot from Devlin that failed to trouble Breeden, but the same player linked up with Burbidge to play Wort in on goal again only for the captain to produce another smart save, this time with his legs.
Jamie Tank registered Leamington’s only effort on target in the game with the last action of the first half, heading in a corner kick that was comfortably dealt with by Nick Hutchings.
Leamington came into the game more in the second half and the opening period saw them applying some pressure in the opposition half without creating anything of note. Wort fired another effort into the side netting for Poole before Breeden darted off his line to make another important challenge, this time on Lewis Tallack as the Dolphins defender threatened to dance his way through to a second goal for the hosts.
His defensive colleague Jack Dickson saw his shot blocked, Luke Roberts blasting the rebound over the bar before Wort was denied again by a timely block.
Sensing there might still be something in this game for Leamington Paul Holleran bought on loanee Nat Kelly, enabling Richard Taundry to return to his midfield role. Will Green was also introduced, but a tough task became harder still with 11 minutes remaining when Jamie Hood was shown a straight red card after the Referee decided he had deliberately handled a shot that was blasted at him from little more than 2 yards away. Breeden dampened the sense of injustice a little by diving low to his left to keep out the resulting penalty from Devlin.
Burbidge must have thought he was in to add a second for Poole in stoppage time as he waltzed past two defenders and Breeden, but Ben George, who had only joined the action moments earlier on his return from injury, got a foot in to block the shot.
This was a disappointing afternoon in what is turning into something of a Jekyll and Hyde season from Leamington. On their day, the team are capable of beating anyone in the division, but with other results falling favourably for them at the weekend they will be aware that too many more slip ups will make it very difficult for them to keep pace with the league leaders.

Tuesday 1st December 2015
Brakes spurned the chance to make up more ground on leaders and forthcoming opponents Poole Town as they were held to a draw by ten man St Neots town at the Phillips 66 Community Stadium.
Sticking with the same starting eleven that had performed so well in the FA Trophy tie against Hednesford on Saturday, Paul Holleran’s men could have taken the lead inside the opening minutes when a well directed header from Jack Edwards struck the visitors bar. Ben Mackey was on to the loose ball quickly, but his turn and shot saw Saints keeper Andrew Wilton make a good save with his legs.
Mackey saw another shot saved before Brakes moved ahead on 12 minutes, a foul on Richard Taundry presenting Lee Moore with an opportunity from a free kick in a dangerous position some 20 yards from goal in a central position just outside the box. The strike was almost a carbon copy of his goal at Rushall 7 days earlier as he stepped up to curl the ball past Wilton.
The visitors had barely threatened until this point but the goal bought them out of their shells and they began to cause problems for the Leamington defence, levelling things up on 25 minutes when a long throw was headed into the centre, leaving Lee Clarke with the simplest of headers right in front of goal, giving Tony Breeden no chance.
St Neots were working the ball into good positions now and with Brakes struggling to clear, a shot was blocked, Breeden then producing a timely stop with his legs to deny Ryan Hawkins.
Jack Edwards saw an early second shot blocked as Leamington tried to assert themselves again, but the game was a far more even affair now. Ryan Frater’s shot to the near post caused no problems for Breeden, before the visitors were reduced to ten men when Hawkins picked up two needless bookings, one for throwing himself to the ground in an attempt to win a penalty, the second for continually trying to obstruct Breeden when he cleared the ball.
A good ball in from the right by James Fry saw Mackey go up for a challenge with Wilton, the keeper doing enough to put the Leamington striker off as he headed wide.
Brakes edged back in front with 17 minutes to play when Rob Ogleby drove in a low strike from the edge of the box after a spell of pressure on the St Neots goal. The same player charged down the right to drive a shot just over the bar soon afterwards, while Wilton did well to hold a stinging strike from Moore from 20 yards.
Mackey was denied by the keeper again as he turned onto another good ball in from Fry, the Saints stopper diving to his right to keep the ball out again, and Leamington were left frustrated when the visitors snatched a second equaliser 4 minutes from time with only their second effort on goal of the half, Mat Mitchell-King steering a low drive out of Breeden’s reach into the corner.
