Saturday 13th February 2016
The first rumblings of discontent could be heard around the Phillips 66 Community Stadium as Leamington tumbled to another disappointing defeat to fellow play off chasers Hitchin Town.
The afternoon was an incredibly frustrating one for those of a gold and black persuasion, whilst the visiting Canaries have propelled themselves back into the top five on the back of two successive wins. Their winner came courtesy of a stunning strike from Callum Donnelly on ten minutes, the midfielder thumping a volley over a stranded Tony Breeden from distance.
Not for the first time this season Brakes seemed to lack the ideas and spark to break their opponents down, something which was highlighted by their failure to trouble visiting keeper Charlie Horlock with a single shot on target over the 90 minutes.
The opening to the game had been bright enough, but the goal seemed to cause a loss of confidence as Leamington struggled to get through a well organised Hitchin back line. Jack Edwards did well to dummy a pass from Ben George inside the box, allowing the ball to run through for Richard Taundry, who unfortunately snatched at his shot when he had a little more time, the ball flying high and wide.
Sam Austin looked bright on his debut, the Burton Albion loanee showing some good touches in midfield, and it was he who had Brakes’ best effort of the half, making space for himself on the edge of the box with some neat footwork before curling a shot just past the angle of post and bar.
The lack of goalmouth action at both ends continued into the second half, Jamie Hood deflecting a low Hitchin effort that may have been goalbound behind for a corner, while James Fry came close for Leamington when he curled a low drive towards the far corner, the ball skidding just past the post.
Jonny McNamara headed straight at Breeden when well placed, while Connor Gudger scuffed a first time effort wide after Taundry’s challenge had ricocheted into his path.
Paul Holleran threw on Joe Magunda and Courtney Baker Richardson for his debut with just under 20 minutes to play, but like his new team mates he found it difficult to make any impression on the game.
Hitchin almost finished things off late on when McNamara beat Gudger in a race to the ball to go clear on goal, but he seemed to hesitate as Breeden advanced and the Brakes skipper did well to smother his shot.
It was difficult to argue that the visitors did not deserve their victory as they took one of few opportunities for either side during the afternoon, but in truth they were not made to work hard enough for it as Leamington did not test them enough going forward. This will surely be a concern to Paul Holleran as the team prepare to travel on Monday evening to a Hungerford Town side who have lost just once at home all season.

Bulpit Lane
Monday 15th February 2016
Brakes staged a dramatic smash and grab raid at Bulpit Lane to snatch three much needed points out of Hungerford’s grasp at the death on a chilly evening in Berkshire.
Courtney Baker Richardson was the hero, scoring both on his full debut to give Paul Holleran’s side a timely boost as they looked to bounce back from Saturday’s disappointing display against Hitchin Town.
Both sides started the game with intent, James Mace heading an early Leamington corner off target, while James Clark got into space on the Hungerford right, his shot across goal lacking the power to beat Tony Breeden.
The long throw in was being used to good effect at both ends of the pitch, Ben Mackey just unable to guide the ball inside the near post from Richard Taundry’s delivery on the right touchline, while rather worryingly at times Brakes were giving their hosts plenty of opportunity to launch the ball into their penalty box, but in the main they dealt with the threat well.
Crusaders skipper Matt Day struck a first time effort well wide from a knock down outside the box, before Hungerford were awarded a penalty with a little over 15 minutes played, Mace penalised for pulling back Nat Jarvis as the striker wriggled past him on the left. He picked himself up to fire the spot kick low to Breeden’s left but the Brakes skipper won this particular battle, guessing correctly and making a strong save.
Diak John intervened with a good challenge to prevent Ben Mackey from steaming through on goal, Hungerford fought back with Mike Jones driving wide but it was Leamington who came closest to breaking the deadlock, Baker Richardson thumping a header against the crossbar from a pinpoint left wing delivery from the busy Sam Austin.
The home side continued to look dangerous themselves however, and James Clark was afforded far too much space to drive up the left and get a cross into the middle which was volleyed towards goal by Jones, who was denied by another fine save from Breeden.
Mackey and Jarvis each saw a ‘goal’ ruled out for an offside decision, but Leamington had already far outstripped what little attacking threat they had shown in their previous game, Taundry firing a free kick into the arms of keeper Paul Strudley, while another long throw from the hosts led to a headed effort being directed straight at Breeden.
Mace found the target with a backward header from Taundry’s free kick as an entertaining first half drew to a close, but unfortunately the ball was straight at Strudley.
Taundry curled an early second half free kick just past the post, while Clark did likewise for Hungerford, but playing up the slope Brakes seemed to lack a little of the attacking threat they had displayed during the first half, and they fell behind on 63 minutes when Stefan Brown fired in his eleventh league goal of the season from close range following good work on the left from substitute Alan O’Brien.
Holleran threw on Ben George and Rob Ogleby in a bid to salvage something from the game, and gradually Leamington began to ask questions of the Hungerford defence again. Connor Gudger drove across goal and wide from Ogleby’s nod down on the left, while Austin saw a shot blocked after some good build up play down the same wing.
The first blow arrived with seven minutes remaining, Mace and Ogleby linking up well before the latter slipped in Baker Richardson to apply a deft finish under Strudley from close range to the delight of the travelling fans behind the goal, who suddenly found their voices for the remainder of the game in a bid to spur their team on.
There was more to come however as the unlikely turnaround was completed in injury time, Strudley perhaps unwisely leaving his goal line to try and claim a ball he had little chance of reaching, and under pressure from Ogleby it dropped for Baker Richardson to lift a delightful effort up and over the stranded keeper, dropping into the net to the utter delight of the Brakes support, who mobbed their new hero along with his team mates as they ran to the touchline in celebration.
Hungerford will no doubt feel very hard done by to have taken nothing from the game, but this could turn out to be a huge result in Leamington’s season, as it brings the top five back into focus with games in hand on the teams directly above them. Brakes now need to ensure that they build on this result and push themselves back into contention.

Red Insure Cup 3rd Round
The ASM Stadium, Thame
Wednesday 3rd February 2016
Brakes sole focus can now be concentrated on pushing up the league table back into the play off positions after they were defeated by Central Division Aylesbury United in the Red Insure Cup.
There were several changes to the starting eleven from Saturday’s victory over Frome Town, some necessitated due to injuries to Lee Chilton and Jamie Tank.
There was precious little of note to excite the crowd during the first half, Will Green’s darting run to the touchline saw him pull the ball back for Rob Ogleby, who scuffed his shot wide, and the same player wasted Leamington’s best chance of the half when he headed a well placed free kick straight at the Ducks goalkeeper Zaki Oualah. Tony Breeden was called into action just the once, comfortably pushing over a powerful drive from distance by Bruno Brito.
The second half began a little more brightly, Lee Moore’s run down the left saw him send a delightful cross into the 6 yard box that Green was inches from connecting with. Jack Edwards then headed over the bar from Ross Oulton’s right wing corner.
The game finally began to open up, Jamie Hood having to block an Aylesbury cross for a corner. Brito then headed narrowly wide from a right wing free kick before play swung to the other end, Edwards heading on for Moore to run through on goal, only to drag his shot wide.
The introduction of Ben Mackey and Connor Gudger saw Brakes return to a more familiar shape, and the Ducks defence were forced to make a number of blocks before Moore headed wide of the target from Ben George’s cross.
It always looked likely that a single goal would settle the contest and it arrived 7 minutes from time, Tyrone Taylor heading home an excellent cross from Brito at the far post.
Leamington believed they had levelled when Moore rounded Oualah, his shot appearing to be cleared away from behind the goal line, but with the assistant referee not keeping up with play, the ‘goal’ was ruled out.
A quick break from the home side saw Taylor presented with the chance to put the tie to bed, but he shot wide. Brakes should have at least taken the tie to extra time when the returning James Mace hooked a shot over the bar from 4 yards out after a free kick had found its way to him deep into injury time.

Phillips 66 Community Stadium
Saturday 30th January 2016
Brakes recorded their first league win in seven games and their first in 2016 as they finally broke down the stubborn resistance of visitors Frome Town at the Phillips 66 Community Stadium.
With Darren Chitty making a string of impressive first half saves it was beginning to look as though it might be another frustrating afternoon until a moment of magic from Connor Gudger finally broke the deadlock in the second half, before Ben Mackey put the seal on matters with his 19th goal of the season.
Chitty was called into action early on, pushing Jack Edwards’ low shot from the right round the post. Richard Taundry crashed a 30 drive towards goal that skidded just the wrong side of the post, before Mackey forced the Robins keeper into another save as he connected first time with a ball into the box with a stinging volley, Chitty reacting well to push the ball over his crossbar.
James Fry tried his luck from a half clearance just outside the box but directed his shot straight at the keeper. Frome were seeing little of the ball in the opposing half, but their attacks often seemed to stem from
Leamington giving the ball away, and they came very close when Darren Jefferies was afforded far too much time and space to get a shot away on the right side of the penalty area, the ball pinging back of the outside of the post.
Edwards tested Chitty again as he twisted to head Taundry’s long throw towards the top corner, while another sortie forward from the visitors saw Jake Jackson’s shot trickle wide after several blocks from the Brakes defence. James Fitzgibbon was then allowed to weave his way into the box on the left, but was forced too close to the touchline and could only find the sidenetting with his shot.
The clear cut chances continued to come at the other end, but unfortunately for Leamington, Chitty was equal to all of them, acrobatically tipping Fry’s powerful header over the bar from Taundry’s right wing corner. Gudger then came close, making space for himself just inside the box with a neat piece of skill before cracking in a low drive that whistled just past the upright.
Leamington forced 3 corners as the first half drew to a close, Jamie Hood drawing one more save from the overworked Chitty as he headed towards goal.
The impressive Kris Miller just nipped to beat Lee Chilton to a right wing cross early in the second half, before a long range strike from George Miller was deflected over the bar for Frome.
Chilton fired wide for Leamington after being set by Fry before his afternoon was brought to a premature end when he appeared to injure his shoulder when falling awkwardly in the box.
Mackey was inches from winning a penalty when he was brought down right on the edge of the box by Marcus Mapstone, the Referee deeming the offence had taken place just the other side of the line, but
Brakes were soon in front when Gudger received the ball on the left edge of the box, shifted it to his right foot and curled a delightful effort over the head of Chitty into the roof of the net.
Frome had a good chance to level when Taundry was dispossessed in midfield, Miller charging forward and feeding Jefferies, who took his shot first time but was denied by a good stop from Tony Breeden.
The game was put to bed with 11 minutes to play however when Mackey latched onto Hood’s ball from his own half as it bounced in the penalty area, muscling past his marker to thump a low left footed strike
beyond the dive of Chitty.
