Following ongoing, sustained discriminatory abuse online, Leamington FC will be using the week beginning 26 April as a designated online abuse awareness week. Throughout the week, we will be using our position on different social media platforms to alert people of what to do when seeing discriminatory abuse online culminating in joining the English football community in a boycott of social media from 15:00 on Friday 30 April to 23:59 on Monday 3 May.
Recent ongoings in the football world have shown the power fans have. It is important that this issue is not brushed under the carpet and instead is a talking point. Social media is so important to fans - as has been shown this last season with no fans being allowed into games at Your Co-op Community Stadium - but simply put: social media companies need to act now to stop the increasing levels of discriminatory abuse on their platforms. It happens on every site repeatedly: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok.
Our strong stance to combat discriminatory abuse online will not stop with the boycott, with a stronger focus on combatting it throughout the 2021/22 season across our social media channels alongside our continued focus on mental health awareness.
