Here's what Paul Holleran had to say after his side picked up a vital three points against Ashton United:
‘It was one of those afternoons where I thought that if we could nick an early goal then it would help the game, but as it turned out it was everything I thought it would be. I warned the players on Thursday night and this morning that this had all the makings of a real tight, difficult encounter for different reasons - the magnitude of the game, the pitch, the conditions, the sun. Emotions were high and I thought we really controlled it well. They’ve barely had a chance while we got in lots of good areas and a little bit of quality let us down, but I thought we managed the occasion - that’s something we’ve tried to work on this year, the emotional side of it - we managed the occasion really well today, and it was a game that you wanted a Leamington 1-0. We’d loved to have won it by 4 or 5, got some early goals and had a nice expansive game but that was perfect really and it sums us up, when we’ve needed to do it we’ve done it many a time, got a 1-0 result here.
‘I thought in the end the fresh legs we brought on gave us a good options gave us a bit more and we got in some good areas and didn’t quite find that killer pass or cross or shot just to get the second, but you’ll take that all day long, you’ll take clean sheets, and you look at another time here at Leamington where we’ve needed a good performance, and it’s been built on good foundations, good work ethic, not giving the opposition any encouragement, and if you’re getting on the first and second contacts it makes it difficult for them, and that’s what we did today. I’m sure when we look back at the video there’ll be areas where we could have done better but we’ve done what we’ve had to do, it was a polished performance in many ways, and we’ll take that.’
‘We’ve put ourselves in a very strong position. I think if you go back to five or six years ago when we were in this division and we got ourselves to 43 points - We’ve still got 15 points to play for now. We want to get as many as we can. I’ve been in Jody Banim’s (Ashton manager) shoes - it’s tough when you come up from Step 3. I think the second time we’ve come up we’ve learnt a lot of lessons and know what we’ve got to do. We think our recruitment has been ok, the club has helped with the recruitment, but we are what we are. We know that these sorts of games are important ones. That was a big big result for us. One of our poorest performances this season was up at Ashton, so it was nice to put that right.’
