Leamington switched things up in this game following their recent late goalscoring exploits, stunning promotion chasing York City, who were playing their first game in a little over two weeks, with two goals in the opening six minutes. Despite a rapid response from the visitors, who quickly pulled one back, it was these early strikes that ultimately won Paul Holleran’s men the game as they extended their mini unbeaten streak to six games.
Brakes exploded into life in this contest straight from the kick off, accelerating ahead before York time to settle. Junior English was afforded far too much time and space just outside the box to arrow a powerful low drive beyond the dive of Pete Jameson into the bottom corner of the North Bank net on three minutes.
Three minutes on and it was two, English sending Sam Osborne into the York penalty area with a fine pass which the in form youngster took in his stride. Defenders blocked his path but he shrugged them aside and drove his effort through the goalkeeper into the far corner.
Lance Smith was inches from connecting with a good cross from the right wing as Leamington looked to turn the screw still further.
York hadn’t shown much going forward up to this point but Harry Bunn went close when he tricked his way into the penalty area before driving a shot across goal that took a slight deflection to earn the visitors the first corner of the afternoon, which came to nothing.
The Minstermen were right on the money on twelve minutes however when they halved the deficit with a fine strike from Olly Dyson. Urged to turn as he received the ball from a team mate some 25 yards from goal, he did just that, and with no Leamington player closing him down, unleashed a thunderbolt of a strike that flew past the diving Jake Weaver.
Osborne’s long distance free kick proved straightforward for Jameson, but the goals looked set to continue as Bunn let fly from distance at the other end, Weaver parrying well but straight into the path of Jake Cassidy, whose shot was superbly blocked by Kyle Morrison.
Dyson came close once more when he was played into the box on the right, Jack Lane at his side, shooting through the defenders legs but just past the far post.
Weaver dived bravely at the feet of Michael Woods as the half time substitute attempted to latch onto a through ball from Cassidy in the early minutes of the second half. He then parried well at his near post as substitute Jack Redshaw stung his palms with a powerful drive from the right.
An impressive passage of play saw Brakes come close to a third - Josh Martin slipping substitute Callum Gittings free down the right. His cross was cut out but Smith refused to give up a lost cause and chased the ball to the byline before dragging it back across goal. It was then played back in from the left where Simeon Maye sent a cheeky back heeled effort into the arms of the City keeper from close range.
The final stages were somewhat nail biting as Leamington were put under heavy pressure by their visitors, but as they had done for most of the afternoon, they stood strong and refused to buckle. Bunn headed over a good chance from right in front of goal in the final throes of injury time as skipper Sean Newton slung a free kick into the six yard box, but the final whistle sounded as the ball flew over the crossbar, and Brakes were able to celebrate a first ever win over the former Football League side - a well earned one at that.
