We are the Champions
The curtain came down on probably the finest season seen from a Brakes youth team since 1983/84, as Gary Ingram's team finished off a sparkling campaign with a 10-0 routing of neighbours Racing Club Warwick.
Due to a cup final being played at Hampton Road The Racers asked to switch their home fixture to the Philips 66 Community Stadium. With the Brakes needing just one point from their final game to be crowned league champions they set about the task and as early as the third minute Ross Quartermaine nearly opened the scoring from a 35 yard run carving open the Warwick defence, only a brave save from the keeper prevented what would have been a sensational goal.
It was 1-0 on 6 minutes when Nathan Howell converted a cross from the left wing. And it was 2-0 on 11 minutes as the influential Quartermaine controlled the ball on the edge of the box and finished with a stern shot into the bottom corner of the Harbury Lane End net.
It was all Leamington and the game was effectively over on 13 minutes when Patryck Swiercz out muscled his marker to blaze in a shot from 19 yards. On 14 minutes Ross Quartermaine superbly placed a free kick into the top corner to make it 4-0 as rampant Brakes hammered home their superiority on the night in front of a goodly crowd.
Wave after wave of attacks tested Adam Retford in the Racers goal who to his credit made some fine saves and held every cross confidently. But it was the non stop running of Swiercz that made the fifth, cooly finishing his run by placing his shot into the net again from the edge of the box.
Man of the match Quartermaine went close with another free kick but minutes later (43) it was 6-0 as Quartermaine superbly placed a shot into the right hand of the net.on the stroke of halftime Jack Winiarski latched onto a long ball to confidently finish the move with both defender and keeper challenging on the edge of the box.
Half Time: Leamington 7 RC Warwick 0
With the game won Brakes began to roll the subs and Winiarski made it 8-0 on 51 minutes, controlling the ball on the edge of the box and finishing calmly in an all in one movement. With the changes The Racers began to enjoy more of the play and forced a corner on 65 minutes which Bradbury headed over the Brakes bar.
It was 9-0 as Winiarski claimed yet another hat trick, characteristically latching onto a long ball, turning his defender and calmly placing the ball past the advancing keeper. The Racers missed their chance of a concelation goal as skipper Connor Mort blasted over the bar from 10 yards, but it was Ross Quartermaine who capped his best ever performance for the club superbly finishing off a move from the right wing with a rocket finish to make it 10-0 on the night in the 88th minute. The Referree added no time at the end and the celebrations began..Champions! 99 goals scored and just one loss.
Congratulations to Gary Ingram, all of the players and staff that has made such a long wet season into a delight to watch. It will be a long time before the likes of this youth team will be seen again. We wish all of the players all the best as with many of them heading off to university, sadly this team disbands today.
