On This Day - January 1 

 

1938 - Brakes played their first ever New Year's Day fixture away at Dunlop in the Coventry Works League Division 1, going down 6-2. 

 

1943 - BTH Coventry were our visitors for a Coventry Works League Division 1 game at the Windmill Ground, with Brakes running out 4-1 winners. 

1955 - A crowd of 926 witnessed a New Year treat at the Windmill Ground as Lockheed Leamington ran seven goals past Sutton (Coldfield) Town in a Birmingham & District League game. 

Team: Derek Spencer, Reg Allen, Albert Sneddon, Alan Bury, Ken Hawker, Dick Brazier, Hughie Morrow, Frank Grimwood, Bill Draper, Mickey French. George Burrows.

 

1966 - Another incredible New Year’s Day scoreline at the Windmill Ground as Brakes smashed EIGHT goals past Ilkeston Town, who replied with three of their own. 

Team: John Crosby, Ray Lockton, Gordon Hancocks, Cyril Parry, John Connolley, Ernie Ward, Bernard Jones, John Edgar, Ray Holmes, Barry Shorthose, Syd Hall. 

 

1970 - A Thursday evening Camkin Cup Quarter Final tie at the Windmill Ground against Kidderminster Harriers saw Geoff Coleman’s Brakes go down 3-2 to the Southern League side in front of a crowd of 482. Keith Shrimpton and John Brady were our goalscorers. 

1971 - Our first New Year’s Day fixture in the Southern League came at the Spencer Stadium against Banbury United. A crowd of 429 saw the home side win 2-0.

1974 - On a frost bound Valley Stadium surface, Jimmy Knox’s Brakes win 4-2 against Redditch United in the Southern League Division One North. 

 

 

1975 - Enderby Town were defeated 1-0 at George Street in the Southern League Division 1 North courtesy of an own goal

Team: Dave Jones, Dennis Taylor, John Brady, Doug Griffiths, Roger Brown, Ivor Talbot, Steve Lee, Dave Scriggens, Adrian Stewart, Mickey Boot, Mick Keeley. Sub: Bobby Horne.

 

1976 - Brakes made the trip to South Wales worthwhile as they won 4-1 at Merthyr Tydfil in the Southern League Division 1 North. 

 

 

1981 - AP Leamington travelled to Bucks Head to face Telford United in the Alliance Premier League. Doug Hickton, Paul Montgomery and John Farrington scored the goals in a 3-2 win. The attendance was 740. 

Team: Alan Dulleston, Paul Cooper, Paul Montgomery, Alan Jones, Gary Brown, Russell Ashenden, John Farrington, Tommy Gorman, Doug Hickton, Duncan Gardner, Mickey Taylor.

1982 - A crowd of 552 saw Brakes go down 1-0 at home to Worcester City in the Alliance Premier League. 

Team: Gordon Livsey, Paul Montgomery, Brian Rankin, Steve Rigby, Malcolm Kavanagh, Tommy Gorman, Mickey Taylor (Phil Griffin), Paul Cooper, Kim Casey, Russell Ashenden, Trevor Smith.

1983 - A trip to Essex and New Writtle Street to face Chelmsford City in the Southern League Premier Division saw Brakes avenge a 4-2 home defeat to the same opposition five days earlier. Kim Casey ‘s brace gave brace a 2-1 win. 

Team: Gordon Livsey, Mark Buckland, Ian Britton, Malcolm Kavanagh, Steve Rigby, Martin Woodall, Graham McKenzie, Kim Casey, Alan Ollis,  Phil Griffin, Trevor Smith. Sub: Cliff Campbell.

 

1985 - A crowd of 275 saw Brakes go down 2-0 at home to Alvechurch in the Southern League Premier Division. 

Team: Steven Davison, Neil Humphrey, Bobby Haynes, Bobby Hancocks, Mark Hopkins, Roy Ashman, Gary Hardwick, Carlo Rossi, Paul Sinnott, Steve Ross, John Woodhouse. Sub: Mick Shearer. 

1986 - Leicester United were the visitors to the Windmill Ground for a Southern League Midland Division fixture. Steve Johnson scored the only goal. The attendance was 238. 

 

 

1987 - Coventry Sporting were the visitors for a Southern League Midland Division game. The visitors ran out 4-2 winners. 

 

 

2007 - Leamington entertained Alvechurch in a Midland Alliance fixture at the New Windmill Ground. Ben Mackey and Jamie Towers scored the goals in a 2-1 win in front of a crowd of 606.

2008 - Ben Mackey’s second half goal earned Brakes a 1-1 draw at Bedworth United in front of a crowd of 525.

2013 - Bedworth United were our visitors on this occasion, and Leamington ran out 6-1 winners thanks to a debut hat trick from Stefan Moore. The attendance was 643.

2014 - Brackley Town were the visitors for a Conference North fixture which Brakes won 3-1 thanks to goals from Stefan Moore (2), and Ricky Johnson. The crowd was 504.

2015 - Leamington went down 3-1 at Oxford City in the Conference North. Jordan Goddard scored our goal. The attendance was 405.

2018 - Leamington travelled to Brackley Town for a National League North fixture which finished 1-1 in front of a crowd of 522. Stefan Moore scored our goal.

2019 - Brackley Town were our visitors for a National League North fixture which finished goalless in front of a crowd of 643.

2020 - Jack Edwards’ second half goal didn’t save Brakes from defeat at New Meadow Park against Gloucester City in the National League North. The attendance was 370.

2023 - Adam Walker’s second half goal earned Brakes a point at New Meadow Park against Gloucester City. The attendance was 758.

2024 - Our first game against Warwickshire rivals Nuneaton Borough in four years ended in a draw; Cally Stewart and former Brakes loanee Milan Butterfield scoring late in the second half in front of a crowd of 781. This game was later wiped from the records, as our neighbours’ over spending and failure to pay their bills caught up with them again, and they folded. Again.
