Despite this season being the first time the two clubs have faced off in a league fixture in a little over 10 years, Stourbridge are one of the clubs that Leamington have faced most during our history.
Not including pre season friendly meetings, of which there have been three, this will be the 80th time we have met in competitive fixtures (Provided I haven’t missed any whilst compiling this. If I have, please let me know!) Currently the Glassboys are ahead with 34 wins to Leamington’s 31, with 14 draws.
The Black Country outfit were formed some 57 years before Brakes were born, and had been long time members of both the Birmingham & District League and the Birmingham Combination before we joined the latter ahead of the 1949/50 season, which marked the very first meeting of the two clubs, at the War Memorial Athletic Ground, which Stourbridge won 6-1. This remains their biggest win margin in this fixture to date. Lockheed-Leamington won the return game at the Windmill Ground 3-1.
The clubs exchanged home wins for the first three seasons, before Stourbridge recorded a league double over Brakes in 1952/53. The Glassboys had won the title the previous season, but would finish 3rd, while Lockheed were a disappointing 15th after two successive 9th place finishes.
Stourbridge rejoined the Birmingham & District League for the 1953/54, and while Leamington remained in the Birmingham Combination for what turned out to be its final season, the only meeting of the two sides came in what turned out to be a single season foray into the Worcestershire Senior Cup for Brakes. One can only assume that Warwickshire clubs were invited to compete in the competition that season, as Rugby Town and Bedworth Town were beaten in the opening rounds before exiting the competition at Stourbridge in Round 3 despite a seventh minute opener from Bill Draper.
Reunited in the Birmingham & District League the following season, Brakes recorded a home draw and a first away win against the Glassboys, along with finishing in the Runners Up spot.
After six wins and two draws at the beginning of the 1955/56 campaign, Stourbridge were the first side to beat Lockheed-Leamington as the two faced off in the Birmingham Senior Cup 2nd Round, winning by 4 goals to 1. Brakes would avenge this in the first league game a week before Christmas however, winning by the same scoreline. The Glassboys would win the return fixture 2-0, scoring both of their goals during a 15 minute period when Leamington goalkeeper John Thornton was off the pitch injured.
Conversely, the following season, Stourbridge would become the first side Leamington would beat at home in the league. Despite making good progress in the Senior Cup and reaching the final qualifying round of the FA Cup, Brakes had only picked up their first win, away from home at Oswestry Town, in their ninth game, after picking up only two points from the previous eight, but put in a good performance to win 3-1, and would only lose 6 of their remaining 29 games to end the season in 6th, with Stourbridge 8 points behind in 15th. Lockheed also recorded their first league double over the Glassboys, winning the return fixture by the same score at Amblecote thanks to a brace from Frank Hawkins after Bob Robertson had cancelled out Hughes’ opener for the hosts.
The Glassboys were back in the ascendancy in 1957/58 with a home win and a draw, as the two clubs finished 6th and 7th respectively, in a cluster of five clubs that all finished on 41 points.
1958/59 saw a Leamington league double, but Stourbridge were to win the Birmingham Senior Cup for the second time when beating Brakes 2-1 in the final at Villa Park.
Home wins were exchanged the following season as both clubs had disappointing seasons, but both were back in the top half as the 1960’s commenced, with results remaining the same, as they were in 1961/62, when Brakes would win the title. With the league changing its title to the West Midlands Regional League the following season, Sid Ottewell’s side became the first club to win it under this guise. They enjoyed a hat trick of wins over Stourbridge, knocking them out of the Birmingham Senior Cup while recording a double in the league, which proved to be pivotal as the Glassboys would finish just five points behind Brakes in second place.
Lockheed Leamington then switched to the Midland League for the next eight seasons, but the two clubs would meet twice in the FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round and also in the Birmingham Senior Cup, along with a couple of pre season games, before both joined the Southern League in 1971/72.
This season was the first of five to date that the two clubs would face each other on four or more occasions. Brakes would have the better of this first one - after an FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round win at the Windmill and two draws in the league, they also won a Senior Cup Semi Final against the Glassboys to set up a fourth win in the competition in the final against Highgate United.
Stourbridge were the first of the two clubs to reach the Southern League Premier Division, winning the Division 1 North title in 1973/74, which would lead to a 9 year gap in league meetings between the two clubs, as Brakes would win promotion as runners-up in 1975/76, while Stourbridge were relegated back down that same season.
In between times there was more success in the Birmingham Senior Cup for Brakes against their rivals, this time in the Quarter Finals.
The next league meetings came in the Premier Division in the 1982/83 season, with AP Leamington newly relegated from the Alliance Premier League, while Stourbridge had been placed in what was a reorganised Premier Division following the formation of the new apex league to form a pyramid system in non league football.
There were home wins by that familiar 2-1 scoreline for both sides in the league, while Brakes won through an FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round tie after a replay.
By rights the two should not have faced each other in the league the following season, as Leamington should have reclaimed their place back in the APL following their historic title triumph; but in the Southern League they remained, and while their league campaign saw them finish in a disappointing 13th place, the season was lit up with their challenges on four fronts in cup competitions, with success in the Southern League Cup and the Southern League Champions Cup. They recorded a double over Stourbridge, who finished bottom and were relegated to the Midland Division.
Now on the slide after the disintegration of Graham Allner’s team and the subsequent exodus of players, Leamington joined them in the Midland Division in 1985, and spent two seasons of struggle before slipping out of Southern League, and then out of football altogether in all but name, in 1988, for what would turn out to be 12 long years.
Stourbridge were not without their own struggles during Brakes’ self imposed hiatus from the football field. Having won the Midland Division title in 1991 they were refused promotion due to ground regulations at the time stipulating that their shared facility with the local cricket club was unsuitable, due to it only being three sided. This was something that hampered them again at the turn of the century.
Having been demoted from the Southern League the season before Brakes re-emerged from hibernation, the Glassboys won the Midland Alliance in successive seasons, again being denied promotion.
They would eventually return to the Southern League after finishing runners up to Chasetown in 2005/06, which was the season that Leamington entered the league, having won 3 promotions in 5 years. Stourbridge were to become something of a bogey team for Brakes, winning both league meetings in the MFA before, after a gap of one season, we joined them back in the Southern League Midland Division. It is fair to say we were sick of the sight of Stourbridge after that 2007/08 campaign! They knocked us out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle, did the double over us in the league before winning the Play Off Final four minutes from the end of extra time, after Brakes had finished the season 11 points ahead of them in the final standings.
There always seemed to be flashpoints during games between us, and from a Leamington perspective, the result was always the wrong one! The Glassboys’ main protagonists always seemed to be the same, too - Nathan Bennett (On 7 occasions), Leon Broadhurst and one Mark Bellingham always seemed to be on the scoresheet, while at the other end goalkeeper Lewis Solly always seemed to play a blinder!
Whether it was 2-1 or 2-0, Stourbridge won seven successive meetings between 2005 and 2010, the final one coming in the FA Trophy a week after Jason Cadden’s dismissal, when Morton Titterton and Paul Eden took charge of Brakes before leaving the club themselves.
Bellingham, now with Leamington, faced his former club for the first time and scored, but was unable to prevent what by now had become an almost inevitable defeat before the game had even kicked off!!
However, after Paul Holleran took charge Brakes fans were finally able to celebrate a win over the Glassboys - by the usual 2-1 scoreline, of course, although they quickly lost the return fixture at Amblecote by the same scoreline!
The two fixtures the following season were rollercoaster affairs. Leamington looked to finally be on for a win in the away fixture, having overturned a 2-0 deficit to lead 3-2, but Stourbridge, who went down to 10 men after this, somehow came back to win 4-3. The return saw Leamington fight back from behind twice to win 3-2.
2011/12 saw a very rare goalless draw in the Black Country as Leamington picked up their first point in Stourbridge since 1987, while we ran out 4-2 winners at The New Windmill Ground.
The following season, 2012/13, saw us meet on FIVE occasions. Both clubs were locked in a battle for the Southern League title, which eventually went the way of Leamington, but despite us also winning our first game at Stourbridge since 1984 in an FA Cup replay, and quickly following it up with another in the Southern League Cup the following month, our next visit there in the league, which was the last meeting of the two clubs in the Southern League until this evening, ended in a thumping 5-1 defeat!
It is fair to say that the rivalry probably would have intensified had we continued to face each other on a regular basis, but with Leamington spending 8 of the last 10 seasons in the National League North, and Stourbridge having switched to the Northern Premier League during the two campaigns Brakes were back in the Southern, it has fizzled out, although long time supporters still like to reminisce about certain games from the past! Since 2013 our meetings have been restricted to three ahead of this campaign, in cup competitions, the last of which was the Birmingham Senior Cup Final at Villa Park in 2022, in which Brakes won to pay back their old adversaries for defeat in the 1959 final at the same stadium.
So, that is a potted history of this fixture, which has a rich history and almost always provides great entertainment, though not always for both sets of fans! There have been plenty of players to have worn the colours of both clubs over the years, and you can guarantee that if one is playing in the fixture they will almost certainly be on the scoresheet.
Brakes took all three points in the first meeting between the two sides this season, winning 2-1 at Your Co-op Community Stadium.
