Known to all as Clunesy, Martin Thompson signed for Leamington from then arch rivals Rugby Town, endearing himself to his new fans with a goal in his first three games and becoming something of a cult hero during his 5 years at the New Windmill Ground. Unfortunately he was then sidelined by injury until January, something that hampered him from potentially adding many more games and goals to his tally in his time at the club. He was quickly back in the goals shortly after returning to the side, scoring a memorable injury time equaliser at Studley in the FA Vase (We'll forget about what happened after that!), and with a sustained run in the side in the final month or so of the season the goals continued to flow as Brakes missed out on the title by a single point to Romulus.

The following season was an incredibly frustrating one for Martin as he was sidelined for virtually the whole campaign after twisting his knee in pre season, and he was forced to watch on from the sidelines for the majority of it as his team mates romped to the title. The following two seasons were far more productive however as he made nearly 80 appearances as the team enjoyed cup runs galore and a Midland Alliance League & Cup double in 06/07.

In his final season at the club, with Leamington now in the Southern League, Martin scored his first goal of the season in the 90th minute at Barton Rovers to win the game. He left the club at the end of that season but not before bagging a hat trick in a 5-0 win in the penultimate game of the season at Berkhamsted Town, which was memorable for his goal celebrations, which can be seen in an archived interview from the Windmill Wonderland fanzine here.
