Youth team bow out of League Cup
Young Brakes bowed out of the 4th round of the league cup with a lack lustre second half performance that barely troubled the Aylestone keeper.
The sides had met 2 weeks ago in a league encounter and the Brakes had run out 2-0 winners so tonight's game had all the hallmarks of being a tasty affair. Despite the heavy rain early in the week the Phillips 66 pitch was in pristine condition for the encounter. The opening exchanges were even with neither side making much headway with the packed midfields cancelling each other out but Brakes made a breakthrough on 11 minutes with Fitzmaurice driving a shot wide of the Harbury Lane End goal.
A minute later Parks keeper pulled out a smart save to deny a fierce goal bound effort from Winiarski and as Brakes applied more pressure the keeper was kept busy blocking a shot at the near post and clearing up a loose ball in the box as Winiarski was inches away from getting a head to a super cross when well placed. Moments later George Robbins latched onto a long ball into the box,his marker slipped in front of him, and in the act of trying to regain his feet tripped the Brakes no 11 with just the keeper to beat, surely a penalty! The referee was having none of it and waived play on much to the displeasure of the 40 or so brakes fans in the stands. The game then settled into a long period of both defences getting on top with neither side creating any meaningful chances, the only effort coming just before the break as Brakes Will Evans fired a shot just wide of the upright.
HalfTime 0-0. Park made a tactical change at the break bringing on the speedy winger Tristin Atkinson, a move which would break the defensive stalemate . Aas early as the 49th the writing was on the wall with the Brakes defence put under pressure from an Atkinson cross that sparked off a goalmouth scramble with the ball pinging about in the 6 yard box, eventually being hoofed to safety. Brakes were finding it difficult to get out of their own half as Park upped the pressure with the speedy Atkinson creating problems down the right flank. Brakes finaly broke out with a long ball that found Winiarski on the edge of the box. The advancing keeper managed to get a hand to take the sting out of the shot that rolled agonisingly toward goal only for a defender to clear the threat. The game had suddenly come to life as a cup tie and chances were being created at both ends as the threat of extra time and penalties loomed ever closer as the clock ticked down. Park went close with a fluke effort that struck the referee and whistled just past the upright. Parks skipper missed a sitter moments latter from a corner when mistiming his shot with the goal gapeing . Parks no9 was guilty of the same sin, with just the keeper to beat moments later.
A goal was coming and it was no surprise when Aylestone took the lead when Tanan da Matandoza found himself unmarked on the edge of the box and placed his shot firmly past Hopkinson for what proved to be the winner in the 75 th minute.
In the dying minutes Hopkinson was called on to make 2 saves from Atkinson and Parks skipper Ross Crage as Brakes slipped out of the league cup.
